John VIII Palaelogus Italian Tapestry
John VIII Palaelogus is an Italian jacquard wall tapestry. This artwork depicts John VII Palaiologos (or Palaeologus) who was the Byzantine Emperor from 1425 – 1447 in Constantinople. The original is from the work of Italian Renaissance painter Benozzo Gozzoli (c. 1421 – 1497). He is best known for a series of murals in the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi depicting festive, vibrant processions with fine attention to detail and a pronounced International Gothic influence.
